Clinchfield engine No. 99 built by Baldwin in 1905, stands at Erwin, Tennessee, on May 1, 1951. It survives as “Illinois Central 382” at the Casey Jones Museum in Vaughan, Mississippi. CRR had four other Ten-Wheelers, Nos. 100–103.

Clinchfield’s most numerous articulated steam locomotives were 2-8-8-2 Mallets. The road has 27 of them, classes L-1 through L-3, built between 1919 and 1923. L-3 No. 740 was a 1923 Brooks product.

After the 2-8-8-2s Clinchfield turned to the single-expansion 4-6-6-4 type during World War II. Alco built eight to a Delaware & Hudson design in 1942-43; an additional four in 1947 were CRR’s last steam locomotives. Engine 655 was from the first order.

In 1943 the War Production Board diverted six 4-6-6-4s Alco was building for the Union Pacific to the Denver & Rio Grande Western. The Rio Grande didn’t buy the engines but leased them from the Defense Plant Corp. By the time traffic levels had subsided the D&RGW was dieselizing in earnest, so they were put up for sale, and the Clinchfield bought them. On CRR they were class E-3, Nos. 670–675.

Designated model NW3, they were built in 1939-42. When GN disposed of them, one, GN 180, went to the Clinchfield as CRR 361. The locomotive takes a break from switching chores at Erwin, Tennessee, on August 20, 1972.

Clinchfield had 70 EMD cab and booster F units in models F3, F7, and FP7. CRR 822 was built as Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis 822, became Louisville & Nashville 1822, and regained its original number when L&N sent it to the Clinchfield.

The Clinchfield’s only non-EMD road diesels were seven General Electric U36Bs, Nos. 3600-3606. The class unit — GE’s first U36C, built in 1971 — is at Erwin, Tennessee, on August 19, 1972.
