Plans have been announced for Siemens to debut a hydrogen-powered trainset in German, while Alstom will introduce its hydrogen equipment to Italy.
Siemens and German national passenger operator Deutsche Bahn will test the manufacuture’s first foray into hydrogen power, a two-car trainset based on its Mireo Plus regional train. A Siemens press release reports the Mireo Plus H will have an operating range of up to 600 kilometers (373 miles) and will be tested for a year in the region around the city of Tübigen, near Stuttgart As part of the project Deutsche Bahn is developing a new system that can refule the train as quickly as a diesel-powered train. The test is scheduled to begin in 2024.
Alstom announced Thursday it would build six trainsets built on its Coradia Stream, with an option for eight more, for Lombardy’s Ferrovie Nord Milano. The first trainset from the order, for approximately 160 million Euros ($190.5 million), is projected to be delivered in 36 months. “This development confirms Alstom’s role in defining the future of mobility, Gian Luca Erbacci, senior vice president of Alstom Europe, said in a press release. “These trains, together with the Coradia iLint that have already proven themselves in commercial service in Germany, represent another major step in the transition towards global sustainable transport systems.”
