Sounder North service cancelled after mudslide
Sound Transit’s Sounder North commuter service has been cancelled for today after heavy rains led to a mudslide on Saturday between the Mukilteo and Edmonds stations. Operational protocols on the line call for passenger service to be halted for at least 48 hours following a slide. KOMO-TV reports the agency expects service to resume on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
Draft Amtrak plan would add fencing at 22 sites along Hudson River
Amtrak is seeking to install a total of about 4½ miles of fencing at 22 sites along the Hudson River to prevent trespassing incidents, which will further restrict recreational access to the river, according to a draft report published by the website The River. The plan would replace one submitted in 2018 that was opposed by municipalities and environmental groups and ultimately withdrawn by Amtrak. In 10 places, the new fencing would funnel pedestrians to legal access points, but in 12 others, it would apparently block all access, according to The River article, which is drawing complaints from communities and river-use advocates. Amtrak did not respond to the site’s request for comment.
Driver killed, operator injured in Arizona vehicle-light rail collision
A head-on collision in Tempe, Ariz., between an auto and a Valley Metro light rail train has killed the driver of the car and injured the operator of the light rail vehicle. The Arizona Republic reports the accident occurred early Sunday morning; the driver — the only person in the car — died at the scene and the operator was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No passengers were on board at the time.
