Registration deadline approaches for MARS conference, featuring CP, BNSF CEOs
The registration deadline is approaching for the Midwest Association of Rail Shippers winter meeting, to be held online on Jan. 20. The $25 registration fee includes 2021 membership dues; those who register before Jan. 15 will be able to take full advantage of related networking options. The half-day meeting, beginning at noon CST, will include online sessions with Canadian Pacific CEO Keith Creel; BNSF Railway CEO Kathryn Farmer; Wells Fargo Securities Senior Economist Timothy Quinlan; Paul Titterton, chief operating officer, North America, GATZ Corp, and ABH Consulting President Anthony B. Saskatoon to consider bridge sites to address grade-crossing issues
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, officials will consider three locations to build overpasses to eliminate railroad grade crossings and ease congestion stemming from the two rail lines passing through the city. The CBC reports that the sites at Preston Avenue, 11th Street West, and Marquis Drive were chosen over six other sites based on considerations like safety, environmental concerns, and cost. The city returned to looking at overpasses, which it studied in 2017, after Canadian National and Canadian Pacific indicated they were opposed to a city plan to move the railroads to a shared right-of-way outside of downtown [see “Digest: CP, CN shoot down Saskatoon’s concept …,” Trains News Wire, Sept. 4, 2020].
Richmond, Ind., puts new roof on former C&O station, beginning preservation project
The City of Richmond, Ind., has spent $50,000 for a new roof and rafter repairs on its former Chesapeake & Ohio depot built in 1901, the first step in stabilizing and restoring the structure. The Richmond Palladium-Item reports the city bought the station and 13 acres of land from CSX Transportation in 2016, and the city’s parks superintendent, Denise Retz, said she has advocated for the roof work for two years to stop damage to the building’s interior, which she calls “a historic piece” with beautiful architecture. The next step in restoration will be an environmental study to determine if any contamination is present.
