MTA asks for 1,000 more police to patrol New York transit system
New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority is asking for 1,000 New York Police Department officers to deploy on its subway and bus system in the wake of a series of violent attacks including two stabbing deaths at A Train subway stations. WPIX-TV reports this is in addition to 500 additional officers the NYPD said on Saturday that it would send to transit service. MTA CEO Patrick J. Foye and New York City Transit interim president Sarah Feinberg made the request Sunday, noting felony assaults are up 26.5% even though ridership are down. The New York Daily News, citing its sources, reported a 21-year-old homeless man with a history of mental illness has confessed to the stabbing attacks that killed two and left two others wounded during a 14-hour period.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit shuts down rail operations through Wednesday
Dallas Area Rapid Transit, which originally planned limited rail operations Sunday evening and Monday, has now suspended all rail operations through Wednesday night. The Dallas Streetcar will also be shut down, but additional shuttle bus service is available. Buses will be operating on a Saturday schedule, with 14 addition shuttle bus operations. More information is available here. Trinity Railway Express and Trinity Metro rail operations will remain on previously announced alternate schedules [see “Digest: Winter weather triggers transit changes…,” Trains News Wire, Feb. 13, 2021].

Severe weather prompts South Shore to continue bus operation to South Bend
The South Shore Line’s substitution of bus service for trains between Michigan City, Ind., and South Bend will continue through Wednesday, the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District announced Sunday. WNDU-TV reports the substitution, which began Saturday evening, is a precautionary measure because of continuing extreme winter weather can adversely affect operations.
