The train was called the Crescent back when it ran over the joint SR, AWP, WofA, and L&N from Washington to New Orleans. The train that ran on the all Southern Route through Birmingham was called the Southerner. When the Crescent was was dropped the Southerner was renamed the Southern Crescent.
