Frequently asked questions for Classic Trains readers:
Q: What time period does Classic Trains cover?
A: Glad you asked! We focus on an approximately 40-year period of classic North American railroading from the 1940s until about 1980. We occasionally cover subjects that are older, such as the Transcontinental Railroad or much more modern, such as the steaming of Union Pacific Big Boy 4-8-8-4 No. 4014.
A: When we get questions like this we typically recommend you to your local historical society for help in genealogy or family history research or to a particular railroad historical society. Unfortunately, Classic Trains staff are unable to help with your research.
Q: I’ve got a really old railroad item. Can you tell me if it’s worth something?
A: Much like folks working on family histories, we typically direct people to local historical societies or railroad historical societies. They are in the best position to know reliable appraisers in your area and even help you confirm if what you have is an authentic railroad item. Unfortunately, Classic Trains staff are unable to help with your research.
Q: I’ve got train videos and articles I’m sure everyone reading Trains would love. How can I send them to you?
A: Take a look at our Contributor Guidelines section for more information.
