CTT reader Phil Lea of Athens, Tenn., is looking to re-create the old West on his layout. Postwar Marx plays sets just might be his best source for buildings and decorations that look at home on the range, looking the other way regarding exact scale, of course!
Q: I would like to do my layout in an “Old West” theme using General, Texas, and similar locomotives, but nowhere can I find any suitable buildings and layout pieces for sale. I still have my old Fort Apache play set. I’ve picked up a reproduction copy, some cabins, a couple of cacti and that’s about it. Does anyone out there know of any O gauge Western town buildings, or have any suggestions? I’m not very good at scratchbuilding. Phil Lea, Athens, Tenn.

A: I hope some of our readers can help you Phil, because I’m at a loss. I recall that Plasticville made a few pieces during the Davey Crocket craze, but that’s about it from traditional toy train sources.

There are far more choices if you look into O scale structure kits, many of which are used by 2-rail hobbyists modeling O scale narrow gauge railroads and logging railroads. A starting point would be to look at the Walthers Big Trains catalog available at most hobby shops (it shows products from a variety of manufacturers) or go to www.walthers.com and browse through the O scale structures category. Some kits are true craftsman projects but others can be assembled with a modest amount of skill.

You also could design a layout emphasizing the wide-open spaces – desert, prairie, mountains, and the like. Then you can put up mainly landscape, and won’t need so many buildings.
