Tips for better GarGraves track

GarGraves Phantom Line flexible track is manufactured with the middle rail chemically treated to a deep black color. The wood ties are also more realistic than the stamped-metal ones found on traditional track, but I like to paint the GarGraves ties to better resemble the creosote-treated ones found on real railroads. In this photo, the natural reddish-brown ties are shown at top right with the painted ties to the left.

I protect the rails from paint by using the slip-on plastic spines from several packages of plastic report covers I purchased from an office supply store. Nine spine covers are enough for one 37-inch length of flexible track. After slipping the spines over the rails, I paint the track with either flat black spray paint or automotive undercoating paint. I prefer undercoating spray because it gives the ties a creosote-like texture.

When using any kind of spray paint, it’s important to be in a well-ventilated area. Save the plastic spines for later re-use. Now your ties match the color of your darkened center rail. I like to install GarGraves track on gray mottled carpet underlayment padding for a sound-absorbing base. It’s inexpensive, the foam can easily be cut into strips the width of your track, and it has a stone-like appearance.
