Here's a video that I've put together showing the steps involved in taking a Lionel GG-1 Amtrak shell and custom painting it into a Pennsylvania Railroad 5 stripe tuscan red scheme.

  1. What a change, lots of "fun work", and the end result is great. Lionel, eat your heart out, better than new.

  2. Great job Janis. Picked up an extra shell for my 1950 2330 and plan on doing the same one day. You and your layout deserves to be a feature article in CTT in the future along with your holiday layouts too.

  3. Very, very nice. Thanks for all the effort. The Good Lord would have done we hobbyists a service if He provided us with a detachable third arm/hand for the video requirements! Blessings to all that present teaching-how-to vids like this one.

  4. A beautiful job on the restoration. I'm doing some restoration on my layout
and picked up some helpfull hints.

  5. A most precise and attractive restoration. Your techniques were quite helpful and informative. You definitely have a gift for craftsmanship.
I rode behind a GG1 from Harrisburg all the way to New York in 1955 when I traveled in a troop train. The GG1 was Brunswick Green, but yours is more colorful. This was the most memorable train trip of my life and was back in the days when one could lean out the vestibule doors and watch the action.
Thanks for sharing. If only my paint jobs looked so well.

  6. A shame to cover up an original Lionel, but the end result well worth it. Great job and I will be looking forward to more great work from you. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Once again Janis you have done it again. Great job. Always on the lookout for your videos in either CTT or youtube. You are the women of my dreams, a women who loves working on Lionel trains and building great layouts. Now I wonder if this beautiful GG-1 will be running on this years Christmas layout under the tree. Hope so what a wonderful addition it would be.

  8. I like your spray booth.

I cured the high temperature paint on my 1957 Chevy exhaust manifolds in our outdoor gas grill. My wife did not think that was a good idea, and told me so in down to earth English. Can you imagine what her reaction would be if I cured the paint on any die cast shell in her oven?

  9. Beautiful total job. Love everything from Janis. I am always on the lookout for any thing Janis does. Thanks Janis.

  10. Very Nicely done! A very good idea of what goes into a repaint like that. WOuld love to have seen the decals going on as that to me is the most difficult part of your project. Thank you very much for sharing your project with us! Enjoy!
