Build a Mason Bogie locomotive

In the December 2014 issue, Mike Garforth shows us how to kitbash a Mason Bogie, using a Piko locomotive as a starting point. Mike has generously provided 10 step-by-step PDFs detailing the project.

Also, despite our best efforts to compress these files, they are graphically intense and may take a few minutes to download.

Part 1 introduction

Part 2 basic requirements

Part 3 taking it apart

Part 4 building the cab

Part 5 tender truck

Part 6 chassis modifications

  1. Found it to be a very well documented and detailed description including all the fine pictures and drawings, my only question is why with so much time spent on making of the beautiful tender bogie/truck, why the same amount of time wasn’t spent articulating the drive unit and making it a true Mason Bogie?

  2. I am planning on printing this PDF out and laminating it because I want to build one for my planned Garden Railway “The Hodag Northern”. This article has given me the impetus to start on my copy of the Mason Bogie. However, I plan to start out using a New Bright 2-6-0 as a base as I plan to use either a Freight car or a combine to hold the battery for power. I think that this is a Great article and is a terrific primer for kitbashers! well Done, Sir, VERY Well Done!!!!!!!
