A northern Illinois model railroader is using his – and others – love of the hobby as a Boy Scout project to raise funds for a large-scale railroad group to expand its facilities.

George Werderich, who appears on the toy-train oriented GFW Trains Channel on YouTube, is organizing GFW Trainfest as a community service project toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 24, 2022, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Yorkville American Legion, 9054 East Veterans Parkway, Yorkville, Ill.

GFW Trainfest will feature three layouts and offer guests hands-on experiences running trains on O gauge and HO scale layouts.

The Midwest Division of the Train Collectors Association, The Valley Model Railroad, and Denny’s Trains and Things are bringing displays. Lunch and refreshments will be served and there will be a “garage sale” of model train and railroad-related items.

GFW Trainfest is a fundraiser for the Prairie State Railroad Club to build a station-pavilion on its railroad at Plowman’s Park in Big Rock, Ill. The organization’s facility hosts primarily 1/8”-foot scale live steam and internal-combustion equipment.

Admission is free; donations are greatly appreciated.
