Model railroad author Robert Pethoud wrote “How to operate a small switching layout” in the March 2016 issue of Model Railroader magazine. In that article Robert shows how to use three 15″ x 48″ modules to create an operationally interesting shelf layout. The story features an HO scale track plan, the Fall Creek Branch. As an online bonus Robert also designed two additional model train track plans that fit in the same footprint.

  1. I found a real world prototype to model Lapp Siding in Denison, TX on a 6 mile branch line of the old Texas & Pacific. They had a branch line that terminated in Denison. It interchanged with the Southern Pacific (old T&NO) which will be siding (industry 1), and KO&G which will be the interchange track. The line terminated on the north end which will be the left wall and exited town crossing the MKT (crossing). The crossing with the real MKT was actually a very short tunnel in the middle of town and the KO&G interchange was a wye, but that layout will capture the flavor and operation quite well. 3 real railroads operating on shelf in my very busy hobby room ought to be quite cool.

  2. I found this article very interesting. Possibility of incorporating it on my layout. Very good possibility of changing an area that I did using the Timesaver approach.
