The Bachmann N Scale PRR K4s Pacific seems to be a an excellent product, having just owned one for a week. I did have some problems with the leading tender truck showing very short lateral swing on curves, but with a few minor adjustments (without compromising appearance or conductivity) I was able to get it to handle any curves with ease. It is light years better than the old Minitrix K4 in all areas.
The MSRP is astonishingly high (compared to even the new BLI M1 Mountains) but they can be had for much less at the big online dealers.
The sound effects, even on DC systems, allow for enforcement of maintaining proper operating speed, something which is sometimes hard to do in N scale. The top speed on a conventional DC throttle like an old time MRC Tech II 2400 is very close to the K4s nominal 90 mph speed on crack passenger runs.
Out of the box on DC systems the start up whistle and bell occur at slow speeds, and again after stopping. It also whistles on reverse. The real magic is when the K4s starts up and trots along at 20 to 30 mph. At high speeds, just like on the old John Prophet recordings it becomes a whoosh.
There is also an automatic grade crossing feature that can be enabled on the K4s for DC mode. One can program it on a friend's DCC system or obtain a small unit like a MRC Tech 6. One should consult with the Soundtraxx website (linked through Bachmann's website to get the technical info on the CV registers) before continuing. I haven't tried this feature yet so I can't vouch for it. But I can see great utility for it.
To get the sound system and the locomotive to work properly on DC systems, as there is no DC only version of the K4 available, it is advised that one should turn off any pulse power settings if so enabled. Only pure filtered DC is recommended by Bachmann.
As it has a sound system it is designed to operate at much higher throttle settings than most other N scale locomotives. It won't start up the sound until about 6 or 7 volts, then begin to start moving. But once it gets up near the top end of the conventional throttle it will begin to reach the typical speed limits of the prototype K4. Since I don't have two of them I can't vouch for doubleheading. But this engine cannot be run with non Sound Value engines in the same track block, it won't work. The other locomotive will race away at high speed. You will need DCC, another K4, or a dual mode power supply like the Tech 6 from MRC to do that. It is also likely incompatible with certain Athearn dual mode engines like the UP Challenger and its hand held wireless controls.
In summary I give a lot of credit to Bachmann for releasing this engine almost without much prior notice and giving us N scalers a great N scale steam locomotive, and for the gusto of delivering a specific prototype like the K4, which was badly needed. It could have been all too easily left to the likes of a BLM or whomever to release in limited quantities. Just like their EM-1 they have hit another home run as far as I'm concerned. I will be keenly interested to see what the MR staff has to say about the K4, as surely they will have a review of it in due course.
Actually the AZL announcement for Friday was:

I would like to purchase the 5 CD set from LARC Products – – http://www.larcproducts.com – – for the discounted show price but their website shows only the regular price and there doesn't seem to be any way to contact them at their website.
Can the staff of Model Railroader offer any assistance in this?
I cannot believe there are still no manufacturers (other than one from Bachmann and a few passenger only from BLI) making N Scale Locos with factory installed Sound. I was really hoping there would be some announcements at the show. All the other scales have tons of options with factory sound. The decoders are getting smaller and smaller & cheaper and cheaper (see Econami in above announcement) yet no manufacturer has tried to capitalize on locos with factory sound? If someone from MR could ask a few of the manufacturer reps (Atlas specifically as I love their offerings) if and when they plan to offer locos with factory sound in N Scale and post the response here, I would greatly appreciate it. Atlas, too, has exactly one offering in N Scale. Of all things, it's a very small switcher. So size has nothing to do with it. While I obviously don't personally have hard numbers to prove it, I know there is a lot of interest simply based on what I see on the forums. Thanks, –Jason
