Trainfest appears to have been a complete success this year. The detail found on the majority of most models today far surpasses that of the generic models offered a generation ago. A problem for many potential modelers today is that most come with a price that people with low or fixed incomes simply cannot afford. All is not lost as I consider large scale to be quite affordable when compared to smaller scales. Trains that are Made in the USA by Hartland Locomorive Works in Indiana are perfect examples. Their little Mack industrial switcher and 4-wheel bobber caboose (close to several that operated on Colorado & Southern’s narrow gauge lines) are prime examples.
Piko G scale products Made in Germany are manufactured with Quality that are also economically priced. Several American freight cars they offer are from the former Model Die Casting product line. Piko’s American steam locomotives are “rail-Fan-tastic”. Visit http://www.piko-america.com and listen to the sound demo. It is one of the most realistic sound systems I’ve heard to date!
Despite the myth, large scale isn’t limited to just the great outdoors, proving that anyone can operate big trains in a spare room or garage in a home. Additionally, apartment dwellers, even mobile home owners, can construct a shelf layout revolutionized by professional builder and designer Lance Mindheim when utilizing the smaller models which can provide plenty of operating pleasure for a single model railroader or an entire family.
All aboard!
My family and I consider Trainfest to be the unofficial start to the holiday season. It was great again this year and nice to see old friends again like Cody. The Beer Line layout was as impressive as can be and the new expansion really looks great and enhances the operations.
Something to think about – maybe allowing guests at Trainfest or any show you have a display layout at to have a couple of minutes of guided and supervised throttle time to allow the rest of us mere mortals a chance to see how a well constructed and properly operating layout should run? Just a suggestion….
Anyway, a great time for all at a terrific show. I look forward to next year and to see what may be coming down the line then. Have a great holiday season!!
Sincerely,
Dan Rawers
