On January 5th, the World’s Greatest Hobby on Tour kicks off its 2019 season. The show will visit 4 cities as follows:
• January 5-6, 2019 – Schaumburg, IL – Schaumburg Convention Center
• January 12-13, 2019 – Oaks, PA – Greater Philadelphia Expo Center
• February 9-10, 2019 – Council Bluffs, IA – Mid-America Center
• February 23-24, 2019 – Novi, MI – Suburban Collection Showplace

While most model train shows cater to existing model railroaders and train collectors, these shows have a dual purpose. First, to showcase model railroading to the general public in an entertaining and family friendly environment. Second, to foster the exchange of ideas between model railroaders and the model railroad manufacturers and hobby retailers with personal conversation. It allows those who build and sell our hobby’s products to understand what the customer who use those products need and desire. The show plants the seeds to grow the next generation of Model Railroaders, while allowing the current model railroaders to see the best in operating model railroads, new products and presentations.

  1. Yet another year with no western venues? Disappointing. It seemed like the one and only show that was here in Salt Lake was reasonably well attended, but they never came back.

  2. All the ones I see are in the USA, seems Canadian modellers are scrap metal. I do not have a passport, and being on a retirees pension, can not afford one. Just SOL!

  3. Are you aware of any Canadian Train shows or model railroad tours? Are there ever any in SW Ontario?
Thanks Also have you ever toured or seen one up here?

  4. Hello Model Railroader Magazine, There are only 4 shows scheduled in 2019 for the World Greatest Hobby? Remember not everyone has rest days on the weekends, those of us who actually work for railroads work weekends. If you keep spoon feeding us dates, I probably will not have enough time to put in for vacation when a show is in my area. Can you post the schedule for the entire year?

  5. It’s nice to have these train shows but they are in all northern states. I live in North Carolina and hardly ever see one here. It would be nice to see one come to Spencer, NC at the National Transportation Train Museum.

  6. Only four shows over a period of two months! How about more shows and spread them out over more months? Then I notice all the shows are back east. Nothing out west. What are we, chopped liver? Why no shows out in the west? I have noticed over the years that certain cities have had more than one show. I believe Denver has only had the one show, early in the history of WGH. Why is that? Last, I notice virtually nothing in narrow gauge at the show – no narrow gauge layouts, no vendors that deal primarily with narrow gauge products! There are products that can be used by narrow gaugers (Caboose Industries ground throws, NCE DCC, Woodland Scenics, etc.), but nothing that is just narrow gauge. So, not a very comprehensive coverage of the hobby. Rather disappointing when you consider all the shortcomings!
