Model Railroader contributing editor Pelle Søeborg welcomes occasional visitors to his home in Denmark, and among the most memorable was Derrick of California.
Derrick is a Model Railroader subscriber. According to Derrick’s mother, he was assigned to read several novels as part of his school work, including one titled Dear Mr. Henshaw. In that book, a boy communicates with a favorite author via letters. As part of his assignment, Derrick selected his own favorite author, reviewed the author’s website, and designed a book jacket for the author’s works. Derrick also wrote to the author. That author was Pelle.
Derrick ultimately wanted to meet Pelle badly enough that Derrick’s parents took a vacation to Europe in July, and the two met at Pelle’s Denmark home.
Pelle noted that Derrick was among the first Model Railroader readers to get a peek at his new layout under construction.
Derrick, you have a very good family that thinks so much of you to take a vacation all the way across the big pond to visit your favorite author at his home. You will remember this for a long time. Maybe we'll see some of your work in the pages of Model Railroader in the future. Good Luck young man, the best to you.
Great story! I think the term "heart-warming" would be appropriate.
Very cool. I am envious.
Very cool!
This reminds me of the trip to California I made with my parents November 1969 when I was 15. I was fortunate to visit John Allen and tour the Gorre & Daphetid for two hours. John was a very gracious host. Mr. Soeborg is obviously cut from the same cloth as Mr. Allen. That's part of what makes the great ones so great!
A very lucky young man!
Holy Cow! An actual young person interested in Model Railroading. Glad to see it!
Did Pelle tear down his last layout? I though he had just built the last one.
A very nice story. Pelle is a favorite of mine also. Congrats Derrick!
