The subject of this month’s In-Depth Product Review is Hornby’s HO scale Heisler steam locomotive, updated with an ESU Digital Command Control sound decoder. Dana Kawala shows you what makes the model tick in this video, and he takes the engine for a spin on the MR&T as well.

  1. I have a minor problem with mine. It will be tricky to convert the engine from HO standard gauge to Sn3. The tricky part comes in making it an outside frame engine. Re-gauging the wheel sets is a piece of cake but Rivarossi didn’t leave much of the truck side frames to work with. When all is done, hopefully the engine will resemble Biles Coleman Lumber Co.’s 105.

  2. I have been pondering adding a geared loco recently and this one looks like a nice add However in watching the video of the Hornby Heilser I noticed that in that a few of the shots the rear coupler was almost disengaged due to coupler hight variation with the front coupler on the lead car. There was no mention if the couplers matched NMRA standard of not, so I am wondering is this an issue with the coupler height on the loco or on your car?

  3. Great job on the review. I am glad Hornby has provided some great upgrades to the locomotive as it was difficult to install decoders in the original models. I am also glad that the book my father and Walt Casler created is still the "go to" book in reference to the locomotive. Thank you for the wonderful insight to this unique product.
