To be honest it’s not so much the SPROG but the JRMI Software Decoder Pro that makes the onerous task of programming locomotives via a throttle remarkably simple. Yes, like the throttle method you can still create havoc, but seemingly less likely as settings are made by clicking radio buttons, typing address numbers, etc. and then applying the changes to the decoder. Even long addressing of Blueline locomotives with multiple decoders is made easy – for those that have never had a problem with those, you are some of the lucky ones!
JMRI is updated regularly and has the ability to even interface directly to many DCC system networks via a variety of interface devices such as LocoBuffer, SPROG, Lenz LIUSB, and even via network connection to NCE and ECOS systems to name but a few.
There is a second part to the software called Panel Pro that enables you to run locomotives via on screen throttles. Depending on your connection interface and method of connection to your layout, this may be limited to the short stretch of program track or can open up computer based throttles to be used along side regular hand held throttle, as well as accessory control, route automation, etc.
Please read documentation and be aware that all these features are not available to all systems and all connection methods. The price of entry is dependent on your DCC system and the device/method used to connect. The SPROG is around $100, LocoBuffer around $S65, Lenz LiUSB around $200, but the best bit, the software, is a free download from the main JMRI web page http://jmri.org.
