The Atlas N scale EMD SD9 is back, this time with a factory-installed speaker in Silver Series models and a LokSound V5 sound decoder in Gold Series models. Join Model Railroader senior editor Cody Grivno as he takes a closer look at the sound-equipped Burlington Northern sample we received. Check out the sound and light functions and see the six-axle locomotive lead a train around our Milwaukee, Racine & Troy State Line Route layout. In addition, Cody shares a brief prototype history of BN 6187.

New road numbers are offered on models decorated for BN, Conrail, and Southern Pacific. New paint schemes on the Atlas N scale EMD SD9 are Central of Georgia and Montana Rail Link. Each paint scheme is offered in two numbers; undecorated models (with and without dynamic brakes) are also available.

The Electro-Motive Division SD9 has an injection-molded plastic body; die-cast metal chassis; molded and separate, factory-applied details; and blackened metal wheels. In addition, the model features a low-friction drive with dual brass flywheels; directional, golden-white light-emitting-diode headlights; and body-mounted Accumate couplers.

Direct-current models with a factory-installed speaker are priced at $144.95. Versions with a dual-mode ESU LokSound V5 sound decoder sell for $254.95. Subtract $10 for undecorated models.

Look for a review of the Atlas N scale EMD SD9 in the January 2024 issue of Model Railroader. The 90th anniversary issue goes on sale December 12, 2023.
