Introduced in the 1970s, the prototype for the model was built by the Berwick Forge & Fabricating Co. At the time, the railroads and automakers were restructuring their parts shipping methods to use standardized bins and racks that fit snugly into standard-size, high-capacity cars.
These 60-foot cars hauled the heavier parts like axles, engines, and transmissions. Most operated in pools assigned to a specific automaker. The new 60-foot cars fit the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) Plate F clearance diagram with either 70 or 100-ton trucks, depending upon their assignment.
The model. The ExactRail car captures the look of its 60-foot prototype and matches the major dimensions listed in the Official Railway Equipment Register. It measures a scale 68′-0″ long, 9′-10″ wide, and 16′-10″ tall.
Each ready-to-run car is made from a highly detailed styrene body casting that includes the floor, sides, and ends. The roof snaps into place, and a concealed steel weight is glued to the inside floor. Its single doors are molded as part of the sides. Etched-metal crossover platforms and wire details complete the carbody.
The simulated cushion underframe fits up against the floor. The underbody has individually applied brake gear and actuating rods that are visible from the sides. Extended scale width coupler boxes are attached to each end with small screws, and they’re detailed with shank wedges, striker castings, and nuts and bolts. The sliding sill doesn’t move. The Kadee no. 58 (scale size) knuckle couplers are mounted at the proper height.
The car rides on ExactRail’s 100-ton or 70-ton ASF “Ride Control” trucks, depending upon the specific prototype. These trucks are molded in acetal plastic and have built in equalization. The metal needlepoint wheelsets are free rolling.
Our sample Berwick model came neatly painted with clearly printed and straight lettering. The billboard “Rock” lettering was sharp and opaque.
These well-done cars are only available direct from ExactRail.
