Comments: Got a lot of ground to cover? The GrassTech II is an easy-to-use, effective static grass applicator. I tested the first version of the tool that was priced at $94.95. Version 2 with a slightly different appearance is now available on the firm’s website. Each version uses a 9-volt battery to produce 16,000 volts DC of static charge (it can also be run from an optional power adaptor) and works with any brand of static grass.

The GrassTech II is made of rugged plastic and has a comfortable grip. The on/off switch illuminates. The version I tested includes screens with various sized openings that allow the modeler to select different grass lengths and adjust their flow.

After filling the hopper with static grass, I cover it with one of the screens. On the layout, I soak the area to be scenicked with liquid scenery cement. Then I affix the applicator’s grounding clip to the wet scenery via a metal pin inserted into the scenery. I press the power button, and hold the applicator pointed down over the wet scenery and tap it gently. The static grass fibers will fall upright in the cement, and the longer you hold it over an area, the thicker the grass.

I’ve used the GrassTech II on a variety of projects, including N and HO scale layouts, a 1:32 scale slot car track, and dioramas for war gaming. The unit works like a champ, and I’ve used it to apply a variety of Woodland Scenics and Faller static flocking. Modelers looking to add static grass to their bag of scenery techniques will get great results with the GrassTech II.
