Most Digital Command Control (DCC) sound decoders sold these days are dual mode, meaning that they will operate on DC layouts as well as DCC layouts. However, on DC layouts, these decoders offer limited access to sound functions and programming.

The Model Rectifier Corp. Tech 6 Sound Controller 2.0 functions as either a standard DC power pack for controlling non-DCC locomotives or an AC power pack for controlling DCC (or M.T.H. Digital Command System)-equipped locomotives. Regardless of the brand of decoder in the locomotive, the Tech 6 lets you trigger all supported functions and easily program any supported configuration variables (CVs).

Easy set up. I attached the power leads from a test track to screw terminals on the side of the controller. The controller’s plastic case measures only 1″ x 4″ x 5″.

The Tech 6 includes a 2-amp power supply. As of this writing MRC plans to release a 6-amp version with a suggested retail price of $269.98. The controller doesn’t have constant voltage AC terminals for accessories.

DC or DCC operation. The mode button on the Tech 6 toggles between standard (STD) and dual modes. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) indicate the mode.

Standard mode is for running non-DCC equipped DC locomotives. The power to the rails varies from 0 to 14.7VDC, depending on how far you advance the throttle.

Dual mode is for running DCC-equipped locomotives. In the dual mode the Tech 6 delivers constant 15VAC to the rails, regardless of the position of the throttle. With DCC-equipped locomotives the decoder, not the amount of voltage on the track, determines locomotive speed.

Never use a DC-only locomotive in dual mode or you’ll damage the locomotive’s motor.

Running trains. Basic locomotive operation is the same as with other power packs. A knob marked “throttle” controls the speed, and a button marked with two arrows controls the direction, which is indicated by LEDs.

To run a DCC-equipped locomotive with the Tech 6, the locomotive must have an address of 3, which is usually the factory default address. You can easily reset a locomotive’s address to 3 with the Tech 6 by pressing shift, 9, 9. However, this command also resets the decoder’s CVs to their factory defaults.

I operated locomotives equipped with Broadway Limited Paragon2, SoundTraxx Tsunami, QSI Quantum, and MRC DCC sound decoders, as well as an M.T.H. Digital Command System-equipped SD70ACe. I triggered all the supported functions of each decoder using the numeric buttons. The MRC Tech 6 can trigger up to 28 functions.

Broadway Limited BlueLine DC sound locomotives can be run only in standard mode with the Tech 6. You’ll still hear automatic sound effects, such as the engine sounds or squealing brakes of a BlueLine diesel, but you won’t be able to trigger any of the functions. You’ll need to install a DCC motor decoder in your BlueLine locomotive to run it in dual mode and access all of its functions.

A jack for a tethered throttle (to be sold separately for $79.98) is in the front of the Tech 6. This throttle provides control of multiple decoder-equipped locomotives on the same track.

Programming CVs in dual mode is straightforward. Press the p button followed by the CV number and the Enter button. Press the numbers for the value of the CV and press Enter again.

When programming a locomotive, remove all other locomotives from the tracks connected to the Tech 6, or you could inadvertedly program your entire fleet.

The Tech 6 is an easy-to-use option for operators who want to run sound-equipped locomotives without converting their layouts to DCC.
