North Coast Hobbies’ “compact” spray booth doesn’t scrimp on quality or features: You get everything you need except the exhaust duct. Its fan exhausts air with sufficient velocity to keep fumes from polluting your shop. The Dayton blower on this unit is rated at 350 cfm (cubic feet per minute), producing an airflow between 190 and 200 feet per minute at the bottom center of the booth. That’s just right.
The booth has a 20″ x 14″ front opening, and it’s 11″ deep. A flange holds a 16″ x 20″ furnace filter in place. The exhaust end of the blower includes a 4″ duct adapter so it can be vented outdoors using 4″ galvanized duct available from any hardware store.
A spray booth that isn’t ducted outside is useless, so you have to make a passage to get the air out of your work area. North Coast recommends rigid galvanized ducting, which has a smooth interior. For maximum efficiency, keep the duct short and avoid as many sharp turns as possible (the fewer the better).
North Coast also suggests changing the filter often and providing “make up air” to your work area. In other words, open a window or door so fresh air can enter the workspace while the booth exhausts the bad air.
If you need something larger, North Coast also has the “premier booth” with an opening of 25″ x 18″ and a depth of 12″. It has a 495-cfm Dayton blower and sells for $499.95.
