I purchased my MT-4 from Caboose Hobbies in Denver, Co. I couldn't wait to try it out. The factory default decoder settings are right-on. Comparing this to my three brass MT-4 & MT-5 locos show Athearn's accuracy to detail. This loco runs and looks great pulling my "old" Ken Kidder Harriman train. It was meant to be, and right on time for me. Thanks MR.

This is a fine model! It clearly shows the results of the intense research effort and attention to detail that the Athearn design team invested to get it right. They succeeded. The prototype is a beautiful engine whether as-built or modernized, and this model captures the elegance and balance of the prototype very well. The decoder and sound system selection and the use of the traction tire on the geared driver are great features. Just the power for that 12 car Coast Mail.
I agree with Bruno as to the sound and the location of the microphones. great looking loco, though.
I am an S.P. junkie and I have to say, this model looks as good if not better than my 1970s Westside brass Models. Of course the downside is it probably won't be as mechanically fit as they are when the plastic is 40 years old, but its a great model while its young.
to fully appreciate the sound, the microphones needed to be closer to the action
thanks guys
Hi Christophe,
You'll find a link to the review under Related articles under the video. That should answer your questions.

Great looking machine wasn't it of the front end coupler which appears to be sticking out too far. Other than that a good combination with the passenger cars.
Questions : A) How much, B) is it available without a SP roadname (blank) , C) can it be bought over a few months timespan? D) idealy with a roadname of "Lake Superior & Ishpeming.
One of the best sound systems I've heard and on a very good looking locomotive too. But it looks like the axles must be off-center on the right hand drivers with the way the boiler is rocking back and forth.
THIS IS BEAUTY AND THE SOUND IS GREAT.. GOOD CAMERA WORK WITH LIGHT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
Great looking engine and proper sounds to go with it. Wish I had one!
Great loco and sound. I only wished I would have went with HO instead of N scale.I have switched from DC to DCC and most of my locos are sound equipped.
Athearn's quality just gets better and better!
Very impressive loco with sound. Wish I had the need for that model on my layout.
Impressive. almost wish SP ran its Mountains in the midwest. Instead, I have soundless local railroad models like RI, C&NW, CBQ, MILW, and PRR. It's a good looking model. Maybe I will figure out a way to justify on my model railroad.
Athearn does it again!
Always a quality product.
Excellent locomotive choice to model!
Never before done in plastic.
I LOVE THE SOUND AND DETAIL OF THE ENGINE.
This the best steam locomotive I,ve heard sofar. This engine is superior to the Reading locomotive recently introduced in July.
The connection from tender to locomotive does not work on the Reading locomotive. I will return it and purchase this Union Pacific T-4.
Great sound effects. I wished it would have had smoke, too.
Hi, this is a nice engine.I really like
That's Geat Sound Wonderful !!!!!
WOW! Nice looking, and sound is great.
Great looking loco. Love the sound. I hope you can do another article on your great layout.
Why didn't you have the number boards illuminated?
I agree with Dave… these videos should include full range of speeds. Nice as is, better with starts and stops. Good job.
