In addition to being available in a wide variety of road names, the InterMountain N scale SD40-2 features an ESU LokSound Select Digital Command Control (DCC) decoder. See and hear the N scale locomotive in action on the Model Railroader staff’s Salt Lake Route model train layout.

  1. Charles, I think it’s just looking at the ground on the other side of the loco between the trucks and fuel tank of you’re talking about when they ran the startup sound and the the bell at the beginning

  2. Hi Dana. Am I just showing my ignorance or what! Why is everyone referring to this as a Kato product. I thought it was Intermountain.

  3. I picked up one of these as my first purchase after switching from HO to N scale, I’ll have to say I am quite impressed with the detail, smooth running, great slow speed performance and sound. I will certainly be looking to Intermountain for future locomotive purchases.

  4. I have the DC version of this model and found it to be a very smooth runner. Speed match is very close to other Kato DC model diesels.

  6. Well, not too bad for N scale. Kinda wish Kato would have cast the horn in brass instead of plastic, it sorta resembled a blob on top of the cab. And a quick get away.
