The Walthers HO scale model of the Pennsylvania RR Broadway Limited passenger train is led by two WalthersProto General Motors Electro-Motive Division E8A diesel-electric locomotives. Each locomotive includes a SoundTraxx Digital Command Control (DCC) sound decoder. Watch the model train run on the Model Railroader club layout, the Milwaukee, Racine & Troy.

  1. it's verry nice and realist ; i dont have any ho us trains for the moment but when i see it motive to have one

  2. As a kid I lived on the Pennsylvania RR. I watched them go from steam to these locomotives. This model looks real good and the sound is good too. They get better all the time.

  3. To Alan Kleipass: I, too, wondered about the striping across the portholes, but had faith in Walthers' research. My guess is that they were painted this way as-delivered, and the paint was removed later. I stumbled across this YouTube video, a Pennsy safety film from 1955, that definitely shows stripes across the windows of No. 5716:

  4. These E8's are very impressive to see pulling the Broadway Limited especially with the sounds. I wasn't lucky enough to see the actual E8 prototype in my area, but I do remember the GG-1's pulling the Broadway Limited down the Northeast Corridor in the 50's & 60's.

  5. Beautiful models. Sound lacks depth of a real 567. But the laws of physics being what they are, likely the best you'll obtain in HO.

  6. enjoyed the video as always, but that,s all I can do is watch them. As Dean Hixson said, wish they were cheaper. Living on social security I can't afford that set. Maybe I'll buy a set if I hit the lottery.

  7. I also purchased a pair of the PRR E8s.Iam very pleased with them. I wished that they would of installed of the acessories installed,to eliminate the removal of the shell.

  8. Just moved eras to the present and a short-line, to boot. Makes me want to start all over again! Beautiful railroad, beautiful train, beautiful models.

  9. Impressive train. Like in South Africa, the grand passenger trains have disappeared. Gives you goosebunps to remember them. I like.

  10. Two questions:
    1) for what period of time did the PRR have the striping over the windows? I've not been able to find a prototype photo with them painted as such.

    2) Why is there a slow speed restriction in place on their stretch of the MR&T? It would be nice to see this train with a wide open throttle doing 80+ mph on the MR&T.

  11. Wish I had a layout large enough to have this
to 'stretch' out upon. Very realistic, both sight
    and sound.

  12. Really nice to see the close coupling between the two E units as well as the cars. I didn't notice any gaps between the diaphragms at all – great job!

  13. I am predominantly an "O" gauger modelling SOU and CofG RR , but admire all scales — especially in passenger sets. That PRR was gorgeous and detail looks superb. Unfortunately, my HO layout from late 1980s – early 1990 will not accommodate passenger trains.

  14. To George F Leach from Kentucky: The Broadway Limited was a Pennsylvania RR passenger train. But Walthers modeled a Union Pacific train last year. We posted a video of that train last year. Click on the small gray "Staff Reviews" link above the headline for this video, then choose the link for the April 2011 issue.

  15. Wish I had a larger railroad to run it on. I did see in my local news that Walthers donated a set to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg.

  16. Enjoyed the video but I guess your copy editor didn't look at your text. I'm sure the train was led by the E8's, not lead by them.

  17. Great looking train, but my preferance of Rail Road is Santa Fe and C B & Q BN SF. Prices are a bit to high for me

  18. Wow as always great video! I am a Pennsy fan but I model in N scale just to fit a realistic consist in my basement. I just wanted to note Walthers has produced a nice set in HO for around a grand with DCC but my N scale Kato version of the same train is much sharper, includes the GG1's (in both colors and stripes) as well as extra cars and a lit herald on the observation car. I used to believe you gave some things up when you went with N scale. I don't think that anymore. Don't get me wrong I really think the Walthers set is good looking, they just ought to give the HO guys a break on the price.
