Thomas Oxnard’s recently expanded Boston & Maine model train layout fills 18 x 28 feet with scenes of New England railroading in the early 1950s. Enjoy this look at steam- and diesel-led trains running along the main line.

  1. Fantastic layout – and enjoyed Mr. Oxnard’s article, particularly his discussion of how he expanded the layout years later. He shared some techniques and lessons learned – helped me to think about how can “grow” outside my 12×12 basement room! Thank you for sharing.

  2. David; a wealth of information and access to parts can be had via the internet. I too, miss-at the very least-the commeraderie (sp?) that could be had at the local hobby shop; be it trains, plains, military, etc.

  3. Ref: the Scherzer bridge: Several ways to wire a bascule type of bridge; using limit switches, reed switches, IR obstacle-sensing devices; using Arduino-type of microprocessors could also do the trick.

  4. I enjoyed the article more than the too short video. The author throws out a lot of commercial names in his piece which mean nothing to me. More explication is needed for these components. Those of us who no longer have a local hobby store to visit have a hard time knowing what he’s talking about.

  5. Make the video longer. Keep the natural sound. None of the music please. This layout is an inspiration! Great job Thomas!!

  6. Very nice. Scenery was excellent, Good sound. Would have enjoyed it more if it was longer. Keep up the good work!

  7. That’s true!! You can’t get much information about a layout if the video is so short! We need a longer video to capture the entire essence of the environment. Even if you put it on YouTube, we can watch it there.

  8. Wonderful! The layout nicely replicates much of the flavor of the B&M in the era it represents. I’m also really looking forward to the article.

  9. I really enjoyed that artistic modeling. Great layout, great video, and no music….that’s a plus.

  10. Just a perfect way to give us something good to look forward to at a time when looking forward can be scary.

  11. Excellent modeling work, and particularly interesting for me because I was raised in Oxnard, California. Can’t help but wonder if Thomas is related to the family for whom the town was named.

  12. Beautiful layout, would like to see a more in depth video or at least more photos. Congratulations on a great job!

  13. Really a great layout! From the mid-west but I love that area of the country. The buildings, bridges, and the way everything looks in the towns speaks to your talent! Hopefully when my issue of MR arrives I’ll be able to get a closer look at your motive power too.
