SALT LAKE CITY — The journey to Promontory for 21st century rail enthusiasts wanting to taste the history of the first transcontinental railroad 150 years ago is becoming more clear.

The National Railway Historical Society is urging members to reserve hotel space now for the event May 7-12 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The convention rate at the Radisson downtown is $149 plus tax and is available by calling the hotel at 801-531-7500.

The Golden Spike anniversary is drawing tremendous attention from the enthusiast community. The anniversary may turn out to be one of the largest gatherings for a railroad history event in years.

The Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, the Union Pacific Historical Society, and the Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society have all announced plans to meet in Ogden for the Golden Spike anniversary. The UP and SP groups are meeting jointly. R&LHS says it expects to include a train ride on Utah’s Heber Valley Railroad and start taking reservations on Jan. 1.

Trains magazine is offering a special Transcontinental Railroad tour with its partner Special Interest Tours at www.specialinteresttours.com. Additional Trains-sponsored events are in development and will be announced soon.

In addition to the 150th anniversary events at the National Park Service site at Promontory summit celebrating the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, Union Pacific says it will have 4-8-4 No. 844 and newly rebuilt Big Boy 4-8-8-4 No. 4014 on hand at Ogden Union Station.
