NEW UNDERWOOD, S.D. — Two crew members were injured when a Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern freight train derailed early Friday morning, KOTA-TV reports.
The derailment occurred before 3 a.m. near New Underwood, about 25 miles east of Rapid City. The two were injured when trapped in the wreckage of the train, the TV station reports, and had to be extricated by rescue crews. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
KNBN-TV reports that the RCP&E issued a statement saying the train, “consisting of three locomotives and 60 loaded cars of clay, cement and scrap metal encountered a significant washout due to flash flooding at New Underwood, S.D. The three locomotives and approximately 15 railcars derailed, with the lead locomotive on its side. The two-person crew, who were in the lead locomotive, sustained what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance to Rapid City.”
