GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — The Long Island Rail Road will suspend service between its New Hyde Park and Hicksville stations this weekend to install a new bridge at Nassau Boulevard in Garden City.
The suspension, on the LIRR Main Line Oct. 5-6, will allow replacement of a low-clearance bridge (currently 11 feet, 6 inches) with one with 14-foot clearance, addressing an issue with bridge strikes by trucks. This is part of the ongoing LIRR Expansion Project between Floral Park and Hicksville.
Passengers on the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches will be able to bypass the closure via diesel shuttle trains using the Central Branch between Hicksville and Babylon. Bus service will be provided for Oyster Bay Branch customers between Mineola and Hempstead; extra trains will be added between Hempstead and Penn Station, and Babylon and Penn Station, as an alternative for some passengers and to connect with the Hicksville-Babylon shuttles.
