YOKOHAMA, Japan — One person was killed and 33 were injured when an express commuter train collided with a truck on Thursday.

Kyodo News reports the train may have been traveling at up to 120 kilometers per hour (74.5 mph) when it hit the truck loaded with fruit, derailing the first three cars of the eight-car train and setting the truck on fire.

The accident, at about 11:40 a.m. local time, shut down service on a busy commuter route operated by Keikyu Corp. between Tokyo and neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture. The company said it hoped to reestablish service by Friday evening’s commute.

Reuters reports that some 500 people were reported to be on the train, with one woman reported to be seriously injured.

  1. My heartfelt condolences to all involved but impressed with the fact they state the line should be reopen by Friday evening. It looks like a mess.
