PETALUMA, Calif. — Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit will launch service to its Larkspur station and begin stops at a new Novato station on Dec. 14, the day after holding ceremonies to open the Larkspur facility.
SMART had previously announced service to Larkspur, where the train will connect with ferry service to San Francisco, would begin this month, but had not set an exact date. [See “SMART to begin service on Larkspur extension in mid-December,” Trains News Wire, Nov. 21, 2019.]
Ribbon-cutting ceremonies at Larkspur will be held Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. The commuter agency has also posted a temporary schedule reflecting the stops at Larkspur and Novato; it had previously posted a new schedule effective Jan. 1, 2020.
Can anyone estimate how far it is, in feet, yards or meters, from the rail platform to the ferry slip? I have heard that it’s a “5 – 8 minute walk”; Anna says “10 minutes”. Is the walkway covered, or is it open to the weather?
How about some kind of people mover, such as a moving sidewalk of the kind you see in airport terminals. Would something like that be feasible?

Its a 10 minute walk. Add a few minutes if you want to get breakfast in the mall across the street and the purchase of tickets. Have noticed massive crowds for the ferry as well, so you want extra time to get a seat.
Ian, can understand the plus side of at least getting tracks across Sir Francis Drake blvd and into to the Larkspur Ferry terminal itself but as you noted. A very expensive endeavor and trying to picture in my mind how that would be accomplished after driving past the ferry terminal multiple times
One can only hope that at a future(sooner rather then later), that a light is seen and a build out is done into the ferry terminal. It will not be cheap to build across Sir Francis Drake Blvd. In addition to working around several buildings, the Terminal is built on bayfill. In earthquake country you have to get down to bedrock on any structures.
I am looking forward to riding on this line now that they have gotten this part finished.
I’m happy that the service is starting but … it is still a ten minute walk from the train station to the ferry terminal. If you are old and slow as I am, that could be a highly unpleasant walk. Do they have any provisions for bridging the gap for those too decrepit to walk it? The world wonders.
