WASHINGTON — Two Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority workers were hurt early Monday morning when out-of-service DC Metro trains collided during moves to a Metro yard.

An advisory on the Metro website says riders should expect “significant delays and crowding” on the Orange, Silver and Blue lines due to an ongoing investigation at the Farragut West station, and that riders should “consider alternate travel options.” The delays are likely to continue all day as investigation continues, with trains operating on 15-minute headways on all three lines. “While Metro will work to restore normal service as quickly as possible,” the advisory states, “conducting a thorough on-site investigation is the first priority.” In addition to its own investigation, Metro notifed the National Transportation Safety Board and Washington Metrorail Safety Commission of the accident.

Metro’s website says the rear-end collision occurred at 12:54 a.m. and involved two six-car trains. The operators of each train requested medical assistance. There was no reported damage to the tunnel at the accident site and assessment of equipment damage was ongoing.
