TOLEDO, Ohio — A Thursday night derailment near Toledo has disrupted service on the Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited, leading to bus bridges today for both trains.
It is one of two derailment-related service interruptions for Amtrak in 24 hours. Early Thursday morning, eight cars of a Union Pacific frac sand train derailed in Taylor, Texas, leading to a cancellation of Amtrak’s Texas Eagle.
The Toledo Blade reports that several cars of a Norfolk Southern train derailed after a grade-crossing collision in Swanton, Ohio., about 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, knocking out power to about 3,000 Toledo Edison customers and leading to the evacuation of nearby residents while authorites determined if hazardous materials were on board.
This morning, the Amtrak Alerts Twitter feed reports that passengers on the east- and westbound Lake Shore Limited and Capitol Limited will be bused between Toledo and Bryan, Ohio — a distance of about 65 miles — where they will transfer to the equipment coming from the other direction.
The Austin Stateman-American reports there were no injuries in the Taylor incident. The northbound Texas Eagle, already shortened to a San Antonio-Fort Worth operation because of flooding-related freight reroutes, was cancelled and replaced by bus service, while the southbound Eagle from Chicago was replaced by bus service between Fort Worth and San Antonio.
How about Amtrak have their own trackage.
From what I understand, the derailment happened before 30 and 48 left Chicago. The in theory detoured over CSX’s ex B&O main to Fostoria then an ex C&O route to Toledo.

If people wouldn’t get inebriated and then hop in their car and turn onto a railroad track (after hitting a pole) thinking it’s a street, maybe the Lake Shore Ltd and Capitol Ltd wouldn’t be disrupted…
Two opportunities to not run passenger trains. Amtrak is elated.
So a car derails a NS freight so why blame Amtrak.
In the name of “right-sizing”, we’re left with a railroad “network” that has no capacity to deal with events that we do know will occur from time to time. One more way our country is descending into “Banana Republic” status.
Amtrak is like a heavyweight fighter who has taken too many blows and knocked to the canvas somany times and just before the count of 10 it gets up and staggers to it’s feet only to be knocked down again. Derailments, washouts, equipment shortages, money problems and an inept management team as well as a hostile federal government and an indifferent public who could care less about trains. How much more pounding and punishing blows can Amtrak withstand before it is forced o throw in the towel ? Maybe Amtrak is operating under a curse
