HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Crews are working Tuesday to clean up a derailed Norfolk Southern coal train near Woodville, about 20 miles east of Huntsville in northern Alabama.

The train derailed 26 cars on Monday morning, blocking a street in town, WHNT-TV reports.

No injuries are reported. The railroad expects to have the line reopened by Wednesday morning, according to the report, which cites a railroad supervisor on the scene.

The former Southern Railway route runs across northern Alabama, connecting Chattanooga and Memphis, Tenn.

  1. The line is the former Memphis Division of Southern Railway. It provides a critical direct link between Memphis and Chattanooga without the circuitous routing through Birmingham or Nashville. As part of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad in 1857, it became the first railway line connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Missisippi River.
