Tuesday morning virus-related rail news:
— Sound Transit has halted almost all construction because of the COVID-19 outbreak, stalling work on three light rail expansion projects. The Seattle Times reports work was stopped as of Monday. The move reflects absenteeism rates of 25% to 30% for construction contractors, according to a Sound Transit memo, as well as social distancing issues. Some work on projects considered critical will continue.
— Also, Sound Transit will further reduce service on its Sounder South commuter rail line, suspending one round trip as of Wednesday. A 7:55 a.m. southbound departure from Seattle and 10:16 northbound train from Lakewood, Wash., will be eliminated, leaving seven weekday round trips. The agency says the move reflects reduced staffing availability, as well as reduced ridership.
— VIA Rail Canada has extended the suspension of the Canadian and its Prince Rupert-Prince George-Jasper service in Western Canada until at least June 1, the passenger railroad announced. A VIA news release cited expanding travel restrictions and physical distancing measures, as well as ongoing infrastructure issues for the service to and from Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
— Amtrak’s Guest Rewards program is extending expiration dates for points and coupons because of the coronavirus and its impact on travel. In an email to participants in its points program, the passenger railroad said it is pausing the expiration of points and coupons until Sept. 25, 2020. It also is evaluating adjustments to tier status qualification and said it would notify participants as details are confirmed.
