NEW YORK — The Long Island Rail Road will debut its new Kawasaki M9 electric multiple unit railcars this month, the first new equipment on the commuter railroad in almost 20 years.
Newsday reports equipment from the initial 92-car order will gradually be placed in service from later in May until next January. New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority has also exercised an option to buy 100 more of the cars from Kawasaki.
The new cars feature electrical outlets for every row of seats, no-touch fixtures in bathrooms, wider seats, digital displays displaying the train’s destination on the front of each train, and multimedia screens in each car.
The first of the cars will go into service more than a year late because of problems including the need to create space for positive train control equipment, and delays caused when eight pilot cars were damaged in a derailment prior to their delivery.

I wonder how long Kawasaki is going to hang on building railway equipment. They are apparently considering exiting the business worldwide.
