MONTREAL — Canadian National and Canadian Pacific say they moved record amounts of grain out of Western Canada in April.
The Canadian Press reports that CN shipped 2.72 million tons of grain during the month, compared to a three-year average of 2.23 million tons. It quotes Allen Foster, CN’s vice president of bulk, as saying the railroad has moved 21.1 million tons in the first nine months of the crop year, 8.2% above the three-year average.
CP, meanwhile, says April’s 2.64 million tons beats the previous monthly high set in October.
Freight Waves reports year-to-date grain movement in Canada totaled 157,073 carloads, a 7.1% increase over the same period in 2019, and represents 10.8% of total Canadian carloads.
