Site of CSX derailment near Marysville, Ohio
MARYSVILLE, Ohio — A Tuesday morning derailment on CSX Transportation rails in central Ohio has sent two people to the hospital, according to local media reports. The incident occurred in the area of Scottslawn Road and Industrial Parkway in Marysville about 10 a.m. this morning. The location is about 30 miles northwest of Columbus.

Live footage from NBC 4-TV in Columbus shows a locomotive and about 10 double-stack container well cars overturned in the vicinity of an industrial spur and grade crossing. According to Marysville Deputy Chief Tony Brooks, two trains collided on the same track and two crewmembers were taken to a local hospital.

The derailment occurred on the former Conrail Scottslawn Secondary, which is not equipped with signals in the area of the derailment. The line is part of a CSX route connecting Toledo and Columbus.

Early reports say that no hazardous materials are involved in the incident.

Marysville is home to Honda Marysville Auto Plant, which receives auto parts by container and ships finished automobiles, and Scotts Miracle-Gro Co., which has a fertilizer plant at the scene of the derailment.

A request for comment to CSX was not immediately returned.

  1. Too bad the accompanying map is a road map – why wouldn't you show a railway map so we can relate the site of the accident to the railway network?

  2. @Steven K Holte…according the article the location of the accident was unsignaled, which means the only clue the crew would have had to the switch being in the wrong position was visual.

  3. So once again the media has no clue about what they are reporting on. To read the article one would get the impression that two trains hit. I guess a train to them is anything, even a standing cut of cars.

  4. If this is signaled territory it seems like the crew would have seen a restricting signal before they got to the switch, unless they split the switch points somehow. But even then if there was a gap in the points the signal still should show restricting.

  5. Thanks for the additional info. Sounds like the Vigaro may have gotten into the mixmaster. Hope the two crewmen will fully recover.

  6. Train with the double stacks was sent into the fertilizer plant yard. There it hit a loaded hopper after crashing thru the fence gate. Hopper is embedded on the lead loco. Luckily, no fire started. Second loco is the one that went on its side. Someone may have tampered with the switch at the main.
