Thursday morning COVID-19-related rail news:
— Metro-North Railroad will make new service cuts as of Monday, April 13, introducing what it is calling an “Essential Travel Schedule” including hourly schedules on the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines seven days a week. Additional changes will see trains every two hours on the Harlem line between Southeast and Wassaic on weekdays, and no service between those points on weekends, and these changes on branch lines: hourly on the New Canaan Branch, every three hours on the Danbury Branch, and bus service every three hours on the Waterbury Branch. The substitution of buses for trains on the Waterbury Branch began April 6 to accommodate signaling work.
— Denver’s Regional Transportation District will reduce frequencies on two of its three commuter rail lines starting April 19. The Denver Post reports the B Line, from downtown to Westminster, Colo., will see service drop from 30-minute to 1-hour frequencies; the G Line, to Arvada and Weat Ridge, will go from 15- to 30-minute headways. The A Line to Denver International Airport will maintain its current 15-minute headways. The RTD had previously cut bus and light rail service, and said at the time it was discussing reductions with the commuter rail system’s contract operator.
— As of Wednesday, Bay Area Rapid Transit has cut weekday service in half, with trains every 30 minutes systemwide. BART had previously eliminated some rush-hour service and cut its hours of operation to 5 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. on weekends.
