CSX Transportation train Q389-08 brings west the last of Amtrak’s F40PHR locomotives and a lone P40. Amtrak’s Delaware shops sold the units to Larry’s Truck Electric earlier in the year, the sale marked the last of the F40s on Amtrak as well as the first P40 to go to a third party for scrap.

ERIE, Pa. — CSX train Q389-08 rolled across the northeast on July 9 with several noteworthy locomotives in tow.

Amtrak’s Wilmington and Bear, Del., shops recently disposed of the last for the F40PHR units for Amtrak and has sent the first P40-8 to scrap that was not wrecked. The units are headed to Larry’s truck Electric in Lordstown, Ohio, where they are expected to be parted out by the locomotive dealer. While the firm has experience with Amtrak F40PHs in the past this is the first LTEX GE Genesis series locomotive acquisition.

It will likely will not be its last as Amtrak will begin retirements of the P40 and P42 fleet next year. Amtrak P40 828 was kept as a training platform at the Wilmington shops after it was retired from active service in 2005.

Though it is now rusted through in several spots, the unit had some recent upgrades including an electric bell to familiarize Amtrak employees over the years.

  1. Well since F40PH 409 was not purchased by LTEX; 409 might become a lease Unit depending what BUGX decides to do with it as I have noticed BUGX has also acquired a couple Ex NJ Transit F40PHs as well.

  2. With all the Dash 8 locomotives from the class ones being sent to Larrys for scrap is there a possibility that the P40 could be rebuilt and leased to someone needing serviceable passenger power? Even the F40s could be rebuilt and leased to operations like CVSR who has a HEP equipped passenger train and uses power cars. They have been known to use Larrys power in the past.

  3. I think I saw these just last month as I rode by on the Vermonter. They stood out to me. I didn’t know hat they weren’t going to be there long… history going by…

  4. @Brett Reid: a diesel equivalent of Woodham Brothers in Wales. Good place for museums and heritage lines to do some shopping.

  5. Have you guys seen Larrys property on Google Earth? He doesn’t scrap them, he just parks them and they just rot away, check out his property on Google, He has dozens & dozens of Locomotives just sitting there.

  6. All these Amtrak locomotives seen here were purchased by Larry’s Truck & Electric except for 1 of the F40PHs, according to photos elsewhere 409 was purchased by BUGX (NOT LTEX) and from what I understand it eventually should be headed to California, but still with an unknown fate.
