A Friday afternoon rail news update:
— The agency which oversees Amtrak’s Downeaster has voted to suspend operation of the train between Boston and Brunswick, Maine, effective Monday. The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority says the suspension will be in effect through at least April 30, 2020. Visit the Downeaster website for more information.
— The Railway & Locomotive Historical Society has named Dan Cupper as editor of its semiannual journal, Railroad History. Cupper, of Harrisburg, Pa., has handled deputy editor and copy editor duties for 18 years. He succeeds Peter A. Hansen, who resigned in March for health reasons. Kevin J. Holland of Burlington, Ontario, will become deputy editor while maintaining design and production duties; Rich Roberts of Annville, Pa., will join the staff to handle book reviews. Cupper becomes the magazine’s seventh editor. He has written 10 books on railroad, transportation, and Pennsylvania history, including histories of Horseshoe Curve, the Rockville Bridge, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
— U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has formally announced that more than $1 billion in funding for Amtrak is now available as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act passed by Congress and signed by President Trump in March. The funds include $492 million for the Northeast Corridor, $526 million for Amtrak’s National Network, with at least $239 million to be used in lieu of state payments for state-supported Amtrak services. Has the Newswire Video section been discontinued? I’ve been unable to access it in the last several weeks.
