“Also, oil firing would allow the engine to run almost anywhere on the north American continent.”
Well,at least places that wouldn’t otherwise let it run because of cinders.
It would seem to me to be the grossest of all mistakes to be converting 2100 back to coal firing since this is rapidly becoming a non-fuel for anything. Coal firing this loco will cause rapid flue wear compared to oil and coal will become almost unaffordable compared to oil. Also, oil firing would allow the engine to run almost anywhere on the north American continent. Almost everyone else who is restoring a steam locomotive is converting to oil since it is available almost anywhere.
