KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Southern says it will require tank cars moving on its Mexican subsidiary to meet safety standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and Transport Canada.

Specifically targeted are Kansas City Southern de Mexico moves of high hazard flammable materials and substances that are toxic when inhaled, KCS officials say.

Tank cars must be registered with KCSM by Jan. 1, 2020, for inspection.

KCSM is coordinating the safety effort with Mexican government agencies and with shippers to comply by the deadline.

In recent years, KCSM has been a major conveyor of gasoline to Mexico and earlier in 2019, KCSM President Jose Zozaya told Reuters of expected substantial growth in shipping the commodity.
