Caltrain to develop mobile ticketing app NEWSWIRE

SAN FRANCISCO — Transit managers at Caltrain are moving forward with plans to develop a new mobile ticketing app for use on the agency’s commuter rail system. Board members recently approved a contract in excess of $643,000 for creators at moovel Group, a mobile technology company, to design and implement the new fare technology.

By this summer, passengers will be able to use their smartphones for mobile ticketing across the Caltrain system. The fare system will include one-way, day pass and zone upgrade fare capabilities.

The mobile app will be compatible on both iOS and Android platforms and will have the ability to accept major credit and debit cards.

  1. Oh Nuts, With the steam engine, there goes the Conductors ticket punch, life will never be the same riding the train from now on!

  2. Mobile ticketing is being used on several systems, or at least testing is underway. MTA, MBTA, Chicago Metra, and others already use it. There really is no reason to reinvent the wheel, you just have to modify the system for the different routes and prices. However, transit systems seem to love to go their own way instead of combining efforts to save money.

  3. Hum. The heart of the Silicon Valley and they haven’t figured out mobile ticketing yet.

    But, now that I think of it, since this is Commuter Rail, not long distance, has any US agency running a similar service implemented mobile ticketing ?
