BALTIMORE — Rail service has reportedly returned to normal after fire crews battled and extinguished a bridge fire over the Susquehanna River on Friday.

The Susquehanna Hose Co. of Havre de Grace, Md., posted images on its Facebook page Aug. 9, showing a fire boat spraying water on a railroad bridge spanning the river. The fire department’s social media post claimed that the bridge is owned by CSX Transportation.

In a statement, a CSX representative wrote, in part: “We worked in close coordination with the first responders and held train traffic out of the area to allow for a safe response. The fire has been extinguished and rail operations resumed.”

The Baltimore Sun reports that the fire was reported about 3 p.m. Friday but that firefighters quickly put it out. The newspaper cites a CSX statement saying that the bridge is back in service.

More information is available online.

UPDATE: Statement from CSX Transportation. Aug. 12, 2019, 3:31 p.m. Central time.

  1. Edward David,

The fire was on Wednesday the 7th, the fire district posted pictures on Friday the 9th, which probably confused the Trains staff when writing the caption for the photo.

  2. “We worked in close coordination with the first responders and held train traffic out of the area to allow for a safe response.” So if the firefighters hadn’t been there they would have kept trains running?

  3. There are two bridges there, Amtrak and CSX (former B&O). Since I see no overhead wires, it is obviously CSX.
