GREEN BAY, Wis. — Canadian National has donated an SW1500 locomotive to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay in ceremonies today.
The switch engine, built in 1968, was used by the Wisconsin Central and CN in Fond du Lac, Wis., until it was retired earlier this year. It arrived at the museum in September CN performed a complete mechanical overhaul to ensure the museum may use it reliably for daily train rides and special events such as the upcoming Polar Express trains. Once at the museum, staff and volunteers completed minor body work and repainted the locomotive.
“We are extremely grateful to the CN for the donation of this diesel locomotive,” Jacqueline Frank, CEO of the National Railroad Museum, said in a press release announcing the donation. “…. CN’s donation allows us to continue to give the next generation a way to experience the past in a way that could never be learned from a book.”
Said Derek Taylor, vice-president of CN’s Southern Region, “On behalf of our 1400 employees, CN is pleased to contribute to the National Railroad Museum’s mission of inspiring lifelong learning. NRM’s work is essential to developing the next generation of railroaders that contributes directly to our ability to support the state’s economy for the long-term future.”
Good job CN. As you can see, the foamers are still not happy.
So CN donates a lowly switch engine ( which I admire) but NS sells off it classy business locomotives. I wonder who has a sense of their own history…..
Apparently, originally built as Kentucky & Indiana Terminal 73.
Well done CN. Nice looking locomotive.
Who was the original owner it?
I would’ve liked to see them paint this SW1500 back into Wisconsin Central Colors instead, but hey at least it was overhauled prior to it being donated by CN. Plus CN paint is just as good. Thank you CN for donating this locomotive.
So, information on this unit’s history would be informative.
