A Metra locomotive on its way to Georgia for rebuilding was damaged in a CSX derailment last week.
Metra spokesman Mike Gillis confirmed that F40PHM-2 No. 205, one of two locomotives in transit for the rebuilding work, remained at the scene of the accident in a remote location near Sherwood, Tenn., last Wednesday. “It was damaged but we don’t yet have a complete assessment,” Gillis wrote in an e-mail.
A second unit, F40PHM-2 No. 204, was rerailed and is again on its way to Georgia.
They are two of the 30 F40PHM-2s built by EMD in 1991 and 1992, the last locomotives built at the company’s La Grange, Ill., plant. The model is unique to the Chicago commuter railroad.
A 12-car train derailed about 8:15 p.m. on March 7 in a remote location, the Winchester (Tenn.) Herald-Chronicle reported, requiring contractors to clear a road to the site to allow for cleanup. The tracks were reopened about 3 a.m. on March 9.
CSX broke a locomotive I’m sure I’ve run, METRA 205, on the BNSF Chicago-Aurora route. It was a regular on that route. I’m glad that METRA is having it rebuilt.
There is dependable rail service on the CSX. More of Foote’s cutbacks. Anybody check the tracks? Should have trucked them. The railroads are/have become undependable mode of transportation.
isn’t Metra big enough to do their own rebuilding? And if not, aren’t here any suitable facilities any closer in Chicago, the capital of US railroading?
Gerald it was dog-piled underneath seven or either loaded freight cars–it’s toast.
how does this work? Does CSX owe them a locomotive? What was the cause of the derailment?

Just because it slid down an embankment into a ravine does not mean it’s a loss…if it only sustained some cosmetic damage to the body and not major frame damage then it would make sense to just haul it up and rerail it letting CSX pay for the extra repair work.
The locomotive slid down a bank into a ravine. I’d assess it as a loss.
