MONTREAL – Canadian National Railway has named David Trent vice president and chief digital officer, saying his role will be part of the railroad’s “objective of modernizing its scheduled railroading model.”

Trent has more than 20 years of information technology experience. Most recently, he was vice president, technology and digital, at Canfor Corp., the Vancouver, British Columbia-based lumber, paper, and forest products company.

“David’s proven track record in creating value for the business and transforming an organization towards digitization is mission-critical as we modernize our operations,” CN president and CEO JJ Ruest said in a press release. “Through cost efficiencies, asset utilization and superior customer experience, CN’s new Chief Digital Officer will drive long-term value creation for our customers and shareholders.”

Trent will start in the new position on Aug. 19, reporting to Michael Foster, executive vice president and chief information and technology officer. His job, the release says, is to “provide the best digital thinking and solutions to the business and CN’s customers.”
